EDGE PROJECT
Project Overview
This certification will allow me to gain the Leadership and knowledge in the field of exercise science so that I can spread out valuable information to others. This training will hopefully help me be able to coach a professional athletic team.

Deliverables
The main source of my work would be gained by marketing. I will market myself by creating business cards, a website, and social media accounts (such as Facebook and instagram). I will hand out my business cards around gym areas and network with other coaches in the area to get a better feel of how different people network and train. I will provide a picture journal of my studying that builds up to the final test. I will also include in that picture journal the process of my business cards and media pages where I will post informative workout routines that I have learned.
Reflection
Although I did not receive my certification, I gained knowledge by studying over the material of the entire book that was provided as well as the practice exams. With this said it also helped me put myself out there and now working towards my internship.

“DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU WOULD DO IF YOU FELT MOST SECURE”
Meister Eckhart
Personal trainer
The project I chose to do consisted of getting my personal training certification. The process that I took in order to achieve this was first to research the proper associations that would certify me. I chose the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I had to pay 700$ to get the self-study materials that would assist me in taking this test. The materials included a book and online help that I could use for a period of 6 months prior to taking the test. The sections in this book were filled with information that would later help me while taking the test.
With this I got to experience hands on within the personal training field at the local gym in town, VASA. This allowed me to apply the knowledge I learned through the NASM program. Along with that, I learned new skills along the way. It also helped me network with people in the same industry that I have so long wanted to be in. All in all, this was a great experience and it taught me to throw myself in the industry because there are always opportunities to keep learning and growing in life.
Growing up I was a soccer player. It was my life and I lived for it! Everything was going great for me until I fractured my knee and was no longer able to ever play the same. I was required to do physical therapy for my knee injury, and it was then that I knew I wanted to help others with their injuries or health related problems. In a way my first client was myself. I was motivated to start a new journey and took it upon myself to hit the gym day and night.
I have always been a timid and shy guy. This was a major problem for me with this project when it came to showing face with potential clients at VASA. Eventually I became really good at masking this shyness. Another major challenge that I had completing this project was time. I am an ROTC full time student that also works full time. There are days I barely slept 3-4 hours, if that.
PROJECT BENEFITS
This project not only benefited me by helping me learn different methods of personal training but it also benefited the people that allowed me to use my knowledge with them. These people gained health benefits by learning new ways to train at the gym that are both effective and safe. By helping them they learned how to manage their time to make sure they could get a daily physical activity in.
Personally I was able to put myself out there and step out of my comfort zone. This helped me gain knowledge in the field or personal training. Not only that but it also helped me network with people in the industry and gain potential clients. The people I worked with were very pleased with their results and continue to send new clients my way. This has also given me a new perspective on time management. Not only do I have to care about my client’s time but also make sure I make the most out of my own time.

QUOTES
“Consistency is key”
“Don’t be afraid of failure, that is the way to succeed”
Carlos Vargas was introduced to the field of fitness at a young age. He decided to pursue the personal training through the National Association of Sports Medicine in order to share his knowledge with the community. This certification was achieved in Fall of 2016 in Cedar City Utah through an online credential program.
Being adequately trained to help people in the realm of fitness is something that is very important. It provides safety standards for both the client and the trainer. Carlos went through loads of extensive training in order to get his certification. A priority for him was to understand the safety procedures for proper technique and also making sure he provided an enjoyable environment in the fitness industry. Being able to apply this knowledge hands on through hours of internships at the local gyms.
The Edge program at Southern Utah University helped me organize the timeline for this project. I learned how to be reliable for my own actions. Having no one to tell me I had to get things done might have been a little more difficult for me in previous years, however at this point in my life I was determined to finish what I set my mind to which in this case was my Personal Training Certification.###
